Specialized Rig for Pagri and Scorpionfish: Compactness and Precision for Deep Water

This rig is designed to maximize effectiveness on pagri (sea bream/porgies) and scorpionfish, focusing on compactness for better management in deep water. The choice of Seaguar Pink Label for both the main leader and snells (branch lines) is excellent for its invisibility and abrasion resistance.

Main Leader (Trave):

  • Diameter: 0.62 mm in Seaguar Pink Label. Robust and almost invisible, perfect for these bottom-dwelling species.

  • Length: 1.5 meters. This reduced length makes the rig more manageable, decreasing the likelihood of tangles during descent and retrieval, especially when using an anchor winch or in boats with limited space. It still allows for effective distribution of hooks, covering a decent water layer.

Snell Lines (Braccioli):

  • Diameter: 0.52 mm in Seaguar Pink Label. Maintains its "fuse" function (breaking point) and essential invisibility.

  • Length: 40 cm. This length is an excellent compromise: short enough to minimize tangles with each other or the main leader, but long enough to allow the bait natural and attractive movement. It's particularly effective for scorpionfish, which tend to be less mobile and often found in crevices, and for pagri that may strike at more stationary baits.

  • Number: 2 snells on the main leader, spaced 50 cm apart using three-way swivels or knotting with beads and stoppers.

Hooks:

  • Type: Gamakatsu Octopus 1/0. These hooks are ideal for their robustness, sharpness, and shape that promotes excellent hook-setting and reduces fish loss. The 1/0 size is versatile for baiting with shrimp, squid strips, or small fish—preferred baits for pagri and scorpionfish.

Vertical Trolling Deeper:

  • This component, weighing 450g, is used instead of a traditional lead sinker at the end of the rig. Its function is crucial for attracting deep-water predators: it generates vibrations and movement, which are essential in the darkness of the seabed. Its considerable weight of 450g not only allows it to quickly reach the desired depth but also enables effective drift fishing (scarroccio), keeping the rig in the strike zone despite boat drift.

Assist Hook:

  • Small auxiliary hooks tied with a short, robust braid, attached to the main hook or bait. They improve the hook-up rate, especially when fish are "short-biting" or attacking the bait at specific points, increasing the chances of success with pagri and scorpionfish. For catching large fish, the assist hook is ideal for rigging whole squid or cuttlefish.

Swivels and End Connection:

  • Three-way swivels: Used to connect the snells to the main leader; they must be high quality.

  • Solid Ring: At the top end of the rig, a solid ring serves as the connection point to the reel's main line. This solid ring offers an extremely robust and reliable connection point, ideal for optimally transmitting bites and withstanding strong pulls.

The reduced length of the main leader (1.5 m) and snells (40 cm), with a 50 cm spacing and the use of two snells, offers several advantages:

  • Lower probability of tangling: Essential during descent and retrieval in deep water, reducing time wasted untangling the rig. With only two snells, the risk is further reduced.

  • Greater sensitivity: A shorter rig with fewer components can better transmit bites, a significant advantage with fish like pagri that are sometimes very delicate biters.

  • Simpler management: Easier to handle on the boat, especially in rough seas or with limited space.

  • Focused presentation: Shorter snells and 50 cm spacing keep the bait closer to the main leader, making the presentation more compact and stable, which can be preferred by scorpionfish in hiding or pagri patrolling the bottom.

  • Adaptability to Drift Fishing: The integration of the 450g Vertical Trolling Deeper allows for optimal management of boat drift, making this rig ideal for drift fishing, a very effective technique for exploring large seabed areas and intercepting predators.

With this configuration, you have an extremely high-performing and manageable rig, optimized for your pagri and scorpionfish fishing needs, whether stationary or drift fishing.
